At what age can i obtain a learner's permit?

The State of California requires that people be at least 15 1/2 years old to receive their learner's permit. Driving students under the age of 18 must also have completed a driver's education course and received a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education (pink slip), either through an instructor of online course, in order to obtain their learner's permit.

What behind that wheel driving can i do with a learner's permit?

With a learner's permit, students must take 6 hours of behind the wheel training with a certified driving instructor. After completing 6 hours, students can drive while with a parent or guardian over the age of 21.

Is behind the wheel driver training required?

Anyone under 17 ½ years of age must complete 6 hours of behind the wheel driver training with a certified instructor. An additional 50 hours of supervised driving practice, including 10 night hours, is required to receive a driver’s license.

What forms do i need to have to take the Behind the Wheel Personal Instruction Lessons?

Students are required to have a valid learner’s permit in their possession every time they drive, including any Behind the Wheel Personal Instruction lessons with the Route 66 Driving School.

What can i do if i have lost or destroyed my learner's permit?

In the event that a learner’s permit is lost or destroyed, students must complete a California DMV DL-44 form and submit it to the DMV with a parent or guardian to receive a new learner’s permit. There is no charge for obtaining a duplicate learner’s permit.

How many Behind the Wheel driving lessons will i take?

Route 66 Driving School divides the required 6 hours of certified driving instruction into 3 lessons, each 2 hours long. Students can only take up to 4 hours of behind the wheel driving lessons per day. For information on driving lesson packages please see our Rates page.

What vehicle will i use during driving lessons?

All of Route 66 Driving School’s vehicles are dual-controlled, late-model Mini-Cooper BMWs with the latest standards in safety features. Learn more about our vehicle’s under our About page.

After passing my California DMV written knowledge test and receiving my learner's permit, do i have to pass another
written test to receive my driver; s license?

No, students who have passed the California DMV written knowledge test and received their learner’s permits will not have to take another written test. However, if a student’s permit expires or if a student fails the California DMV road knowledge test three times he or she may need to take the written knowledge test again.

Will other students be in the car with me?

No other students will be in the car during driving lessons. All of Route 66 Driving School’s Behind the Wheel Personal Instruction is done through one-on-one private lessons.

How long is the Online Driver's Ed. Program?

Route 66 Driving School offers a 30-hour online driving course in 10 chapters that meets the California DMV’s requirements. Please note that students can take additional time to complete the course and review the material.

How long is the Online Driver's Ed. Program?

Students can complete the Online Driver’s Ed. Program at their own pace over a six-month period after registering. If six months has passed since registration please contact us to inquire about continuing with the program.

>Are online driver education program courses legal in California and do they meet the California DMV requirements?

Online driver education courses are legal in the State of California. Licensed driving schools that have been approved by the California DMV, such as Route 66 Driving School, meet all driver education requirements and can legally issue state completion certificates.

Are you licensed, insured and bonded?

Route 66 Driving School is a fully insured and bonded company that has been certified and licensed through the California DMV.

What is Route 66 Driving School's license number?

Our state license number is E4620 and has been issued by the California DMV and Occupational Licensing.

Are there restrictions on my driver's license?

Anyone over the age of 18 has no restrictions on their driver’s license. However, those under 18 who acquire a driver’s license are subject to restrictions for one year or until they reach 18. Restrictions include not being able to drive between 11:00 PM and 5:00 AM, not transporting anyone under 20 years old unless accompanied by another licensed driver who is 25 years of age or older, and not using a mobile phone or hands-free device while driving.

Can a rental car be used during the California DMV Driver Test?

The California DMV requires that a person’s own name appear on a rental car contract. Since rental companies require people to be 25 years of age or older and hold a valid driver’s license, you will not be able to use a rental car for the Driver Test. However, you can use the Route 66 Driving School car for the Driver Test when you sign up for either our Local DMV or Non-Local DMV Driver Test. We will schedule the Driver Test, pick you up in the same car you have been training with, give a free hour of pre-test practice and take you to the DMV.
